A public reprimand and certain penalties have been issued for University of California, Santa Barbara, men’s soccer assistant coach Greg Curry for misconduct during the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship.
Specifically, Curry was found to have engaged in misconduct by verbally abusing a referee to the point of having to be escorted from the stadium by security personnel.
In addition to the public reprimand, the Division I Men’s Soccer Committee issued Curry a one-game NCAA championship suspension for the next NCAA tournament game opportunity he will have as a coach, regardless of what institution he represents. The committee also is withholding his transportation expenses and championship per diem.
“Coaches serve as the standards and role models for our student-athletes and this type of unsportsmanlike behavior cannot be tolerated by the men’s soccer committee,” said Al Albert, chair of the Division I Men’s Soccer Committee and associate athletic director of development at the College of William and Mary. “We believe these actions discredit the championship for which these teams have worked so hard to qualify. All student-athletes and coaches must conduct themselves in a manner that befits the championship level competition.”
