NCAA administrator Greg Shaheen resigns

Greg Shaheen has announced his resignation from the national office to pursue other opportunities outside the association, effective immediately.

Shaheen most recently served as interim executive vice president, championships and alliances. On Tuesday, NCAA President Mark Emmert announced the selection of Mark Lewis to fill the EVP post.

“Transition is always challenging, but Mark inherits an exceedingly capable staff that I know will continue to put forward exceptional work,” NCAA COO Jim Isch said. “There is no question that Greg contributed enormously to almost every aspect of how we put on championships, and I wish him every success in his future endeavors.”

Shaheen has spent the last 12 years overseeing the growth of the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, including the successful launch of the First Four, the broadening of the variety of activities surrounding the Final Four, and the negotiation of the association’s current broadcast partnerships with CBS, Turner and ESPN.

“The NCAA's where I dreamed of working all my life. I came here for basketball and stayed because of good people and for the student-athletes we serve,” Shaheen said. “Mark Lewis inherits good people with an innovative focus and 89 championships ready to roll.”

Shaheen joined the NCAA in 2000 after serving as the director of operations for the local organizing committee when Indianapolis hosted the NCAA Final Four. He also served as the executive director of the NCAA 2000 Project, overseeing the development of the association’s headquarters in Indianapolis. For the 18 years prior to that, Shaheen served as the chief administrative officer of Indiana-based Long Electric.

Lewis is committed to having his team prepared to continue the success of March Madness. “Running the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments are no doubt demanding responsibilities, and my attention will now turn to adding new members to our team to fill these roles,” Lewis said. “I’ve been invigorated and impressed by the Championships and Alliances team in the short time I’ve been on board; I look forward to working with the team here, as well as our partners, in the days and weeks ahead.”
