CBS Sports to air two-part NCAA Winter Championships Show
NCAA.org
INDIANAPOLIS --- For the tenth consecutive year, all of the NCAA championships will receive television exposure, including 18 winter championships being featured in two one-hour specials.
CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA, Part I will air Saturday, April 28 (1:00 p.m. ET) and Part II on Sunday, May 13 (3:00 p.m. ET), on CBS. Highlights and stories from basketball, ice hockey, indoor track and field, rifle, swimming and diving and wrestling will be featured in the program.
As individuals and teams pursue their ultimate goal to become an NCAA champion, some of the feature stories include:
- In NCAA Division III men’s indoor track and field, North Central College looks to capture its third straight championship. But with the Cardinals fielding fewer student-athletes in the championship this year and the overall field being tougher than ever, the title is not a foregone conclusion. One of the Cardinals’ title hopes lies in returning sprinter Dan Benton, who is looking to win an individual championship in the 400m dash after losing last year by one of the smallest margins in history.
- Wartburg College won the Division III Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship in 2009 and 2010, but was denied a third straight title by the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, in 2011. The Knights are determined to recapture their throne and win the championship for the third time in four years.
- Junior Sarah Scherer of the Texas Christian University rifle team is ranked as one of the top shooters in the country, but is entering the championship with a heavy heart. Scherer will look to lead the Horned Frogs to their second title in three seasons, while also honoring the memory of her brother who recently passed away.
- The Drury University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have dominated the Division II swimming and diving championships recently. But an upstart program from Grand Canyon University has its sights set on knocking off the reigning title holders and staking their claim as the best in the pool at this year’s championship.
CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson serves as host of the CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA. The winter highlight show is produced by Ryan Galvin, with Alana Campbell, Brian Seeling, Jawn Morales and Lindsay Goward serving as the feature producers.
CBS Sports has aired 28 seasonal shows from the three NCAA sports seasons (fall, winter, spring) over the last nine years. The April 28 and May 13 shows are the 29th edition of CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA. Each seasonal show features highlights and unique NCAA student-athlete stories from a variety of NCAA Division I, II and III championships.
