St. Andrews Presbyterian will leave Division II and Conference Carolinas beginning with the 2012-13 academic year for the NAIA. The Knights originally moved from the NAIA to Division II and Conference Carolinas in 1988, 23 years ago. The conference will now have 12 members.

Other transactions

Fred Cantler

Athletics directors – Western Carolina announced that Joseph “Chip” Smith will no longer serve as its director of intercollegiate athletics, a position he’s held since 2004. Fred Cantler, longtime senior associate athletic director for internal operations, will take over the role on an interim basis.

Coaches

Football – Minnesota signed head football coach Jerry Kill to a seven-year contract that runs from December 2010 through February 2018. Kill is in his first season as head coach and has been working under a Memorandum of Agreement he signed with the University.

Conferences

Oral Roberts will join the Southland Conference beginning with the 2012-13 academic year, bringing the league’s membership to 10 institutions. Oral Roberts competed in the Summit League since 1997-98.

NCAA Committee Vacancies

The NCAA is soliciting nominations for an immediate vacancy on the Division II Championships Committee. The appointee will replace Dale Clayton, formerly of Carson-Newman. The committee preference is for the Southeast region (Conference Carolinas, Peach Belt Conference, South Atlantic Conference). The deadline for submitting nomination materials is November 23, 2011. Nominations must be submitted online (access code: membership2, password: service).
