Penalty for University of Southern Indiana former head coach upheld by NCAA Committee

The NCAA Division II Infractions Appeals Committee has upheld the two-year show-cause penalty for the former head men’s basketball coach at the University of Southern Indiana.

The case included inducement, tryout, extra benefit violations and failure to promote an atmosphere for compliance by the former head coach. 

Penalties for the violations included one-year probation, a one-year postseason ban for men’s basketball, a vacation of records, a $2,400 penalty for the university, a three-year show-cause order for a former assistant coach and a two-year show-cause order for the former head coach.

The show-cause order outlined how the duties of the former head coach must be limited at his present and any future employing institutions during the stipulated time period.

In his written appeal, the former head coach stated there had been adequate supervision of assistant coaches throughout his tenure. He asserted the show-cause order was excessive and should be set aside. 

On review of the appeal, the Infractions Appeals Committee found no basis for overturning the findings of the NCAA Division II Committee on Infractions.

In considering the former head coach’s appeal, the Infractions Appeals Committee reviewed the notice of appeal; the transcript of the August 12, 2010, Committee on Infractions hearing; and the submissions by the former head coach and the Committee on Infractions.  

The members of the Infractions Appeals Committee who heard this case were LaKeisha Marsh, Associate Vice President & Counsel, TCS Education System, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Chair; Dan Kenney, athletics director at University of North Carolina at Pembroke; Gregory Moore, commissioner at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference; and Morgan Walker, associate athletics director at California State University, San Bernardino.
