Longtime Dayton assistant football coach Dave Whilding will retire at the end of the season. Whilding is in the midst of his 35th year at Dayton, the last 29 of which he has spent as offensive coordinator. He will coach his last game Saturday when Dayton takes on Drake.

Other transactions

Presidents and chancellors – Penn State President Graham Spanier stepped down. The school named Rodney A. Erickson, executive vice president and provost, as interim president.

Associate athletics directors – Sacred heart appointed Joseph Del Rossi senior associate athletics director for development.

Coaches

Women’s basketball – Michigan added John Barnes to its women’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant. Barnes has 16 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, serving as head coach at Michigan Tech from 2003-10 … Occidental named Candice Wiggins assistant women’s basketball coach. Wiggins, a former All-American at Stanford and currently a professional basketball player, will coach during the WNBA offseason.

Football – Penn State released Joe Paterno. Paterno earlier had announced he was retiring at the end of the season.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Bowdoin head men’s lacrosse coach Tom McCabe announced that the 2012 season will he his last. Having coached at Bowdoin since 1990, McCabe is stepping down to join his wife in the Peace Corps.

Staff

Enforcement – The NCAA hired Indianapolis Metropolitan Police veteran William Benjamin as director of enforcement with a focus on football. Benjamin spent 28 years on the force, most recently as deputy chief of police.

Conferences

The Eastern College Athletic Conference appointed Matt Fogg, formerly the league’s coordinator of marketing and sport administration, coordinator of leagues. Pat Colbert moves over from operations to become the director of special events. Alex Lerch is now the conference’s coordinator of sport administration, while Michael Letzeisen is a coordinator of sport administration. Lastly, Jen Pacelli was re-hired as the director of Division II governance/marketing & special events … Landmark Conference Commissioner John A. Reeves will retire at the end of his current contract, which concludes June 30, 2012. Reeves became the first, and only, commissioner in the history of the conference when he was hired in September 2006.

Sport sponsorship

Meredith is adding women’s lacrosse as its seventh varsity sport. The squad will begin competition in the 2012-13 academic year … The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association will add men’s soccer as a conference sport, effective with the 2012 season.
