NCAA communications VP selected to McLendon Hall of Fame

NCAA Vice President of Communications Bob Williams is the NCAA’s newest member of the John McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame.

Williams, who has been in a leadership role with the NCAA since February 2005, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as the NCAA representative on June 27, 2012, in conjunction with the 47th annual National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention in Dallas.

NACDA also announced that past president of the organization Lee McElroy, the current vice president and athletics director at the University at Albany will be inducted into the John McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame as the NACDA representative.

The John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation, in partnership with NACDA, oversees and administers the Hall of Fame.

As vice president of communications at the NCAA national office, Williams oversees the Association’s communications efforts through three units: public and media relations, digital communications, and image management and communications strategy.  He is also the Association’s primary media spokesperson.

Williams advises the NCAA president and senior management on policies that support the Association’s core values, including scholarship, student-athlete well-being, diversity and the promotion of athletics participation. He leads a team of 30 individuals that advocates those policies to NCAA members, 400,000 student-athletes and their families, and the public.  

Williams joined the NCAA in February 2005 after more than 25 years of service with the United States Air Force, where he managed public relations activities in a number of capacities since 1980. Most recently, he oversaw all public affairs efforts for Air Combat Command – which is made up of 170,000 people and provides combat air forces for military operations around the world – at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

He received his bachelor’s degree in mass communication from the State University College at Buffalo and a master’s degree in mass communication and public relations from Boston University.
