Joe Castiglione, vice president of intercollegiate athletics programs and director of athletics at the University of Oklahoma, has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. Castiglione is replacing former Big 12 Conference Commissioner Dan Beebe, and will serve out the remainder of Beebe’s term through the 2012-13 season.
“It is an honor to serve with this prestigious committee; a committee that has provided outstanding leadership through the years,” Castiglione said. “The NCAA basketball tournament has emerged as one of this country’s greatest sporting events. I recognize and embrace the high expectations that come with this role and look forward to working with my colleagues in presenting the best of college basketball. I fully understand that this assignment requires a great deal of preparation and I’m excited to get started.”
Castiglione’s service to the Association includes chairing the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) Working Group and past participation on the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, the Division I Baseball Committee, the Diversity Leadership Strategic Planning Committee and the Division I Women’s Basketball Discussion Group. He also is a member of the Bowl Licensing Task Force and has served on the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Board of Directors.
Castiglione has spent the past 13 years as the director of athletics at Oklahoma, having been hired in 1998 after spending the previous 17 years at the University of Missouri. He began his career at Missouri as the director of communications and marketing before being named the director of athletics in 1993. The 1979 graduate of Maryland began his professional career as the sports promotions director at Rice before going to Georgetown as director of athletics fundraising and then on to Missouri.
