Eastern adds women’s golf

Eastern University, a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference located in St. Davids, Pa., will add women’s golf as the school’s 16th intercollegiate sport beginning with the upcoming 2011-12 season. 

“I applaud the university acknowledging the positives this addition brings, not only to our athletics department, but to the institution as a whole,” said Athletics Director Brad Fields. “Women’s golf is a rapidly growing sport within the college ranks, and combined with the greater Philadelphia area’s rich tradition with the game, I expect great things in the near future.” 

The addition of women’s golf also accomplishes a number of strategic goals, both within Eastern athletics as well as the Middle Atlantic Conference, Fields said. While actively demonstrating Eastern’s commitment to both enhancing women’s athletics and sport expansion, the move also brings Eastern in compliance with the MAC’s desire for league members to sponsor at least 16 sports. It also brings the MAC closer to an automatic qualifier for NCAA tournament play in women’s golf. 

First-year head women’s basketball coach Nate Davis will be elevated to a full-time role within athletics and add the role of head women’s golf coach.
