Javier Cevallos, president of Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, has been elected as the Region 1 representative to the Division II Presidents Council, replacing former Southern Connecticut State University President Cheryl Norton.
Cevallos has been president at Kutztown since 2002. Before that, he served extensively at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, which he joined as an assistant Spanish professor in 1984. He became associate professor in 1988 and a full professor four years later.
In 1994, Cevallos was asked to serve as faculty advisor to the provost at Massachusetts, and in 1996 he was selected as a Fellow by the American Council on Education. Cevallos spent his fellowship with Douglas Bennet, president of Wesleyan University.
Upon his return to Massachusetts, Cevallos became chair of the department of Spanish and Portuguese. Soon after, he was appointed vice chancellor for student affairs, a position he held until he was appointed at Kutztown.
Cevallos is a native of Ecuador who earned his bachelor’s degree in 1976 at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez. From Puerto Rico, Cevallos moved to Illinois, where he earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in 1978 and 1981, respectively, from the University of Illinois, Champaign.
He began his career in education in 1981 as an assistant professor of Spanish at the University of Maine, Orono.
His wife, Josée Vachon, is a professional French Canadian folk singer.
