CoSIDA names women’s at-large scholar team

Senior gymnast Kayla Hoffman of NCAA champion Alabama and senior golfer Marianne Andersson of Florida Southern headline the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Hoffman and Andersson have been chosen as the winners of the Academic All-America of the Year award in the university and college divisions, respectively. The Women’s At-Large cohort for the Academic All-America program includes bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rowing, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, and water polo.

A human development and family studies major with a perfect grade-point average, Hoffman capped her career by leading Alabama to its fifth NCAA gymnastics championship in April. A five-time All-American, Hoffman became the first student-athlete to be named as the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Year and the SEC Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the same season.

Hoffman is this year’s winner of the Honda Award, presented to the national collegiate gymnast of the year, and an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient.

A repeat selection on the women’s at-large first team, Andersson is a finance major with a 4.0 GPA. Named as a first-team National Golf Coaches Association All-American as a senior, she earned second-team honors in 2010. 

Andersson finished 11th at the Division II championship in May and led the Moccasins to a third-place finish in the team standings. A four-time All-Sunshine State Conference golfer, she earned the NCAA Elite 88 award at the Division II golf championship as the NCAA golf championship competitor with the highest overall GPA.
