New York University affiliates with Centennial in wrestling

The Centennial Conference announced Monday that New York University has accepted an invitation to join the league as an associate member in wrestling.

The addition of New York University gives the conference nine members that sponsor the sport – Gettysburg, Johns Hopkins, McDaniel, Merchant Marine, Muhlenberg, Stevens, Ursinus, and Washington and Lee.

“NYU’s academic reputation, commitment to scholar-athletes and tradition in wrestling were important factors in our decision,” said Jane McAuliffe, president of Bryn Mawr College and chair of the conference’s Presidents Council.

Steven F. Ulrich, executive director of the Centennial, said the addition “adds to our reputation as one of the elite small-college conferences in the country.”

Christopher Bledsoe, director of athletics, intramurals and recreation at New York University, said the conference affiliation provides a competitive wrestling schedule with like-minded institutions. “The Centennial is composed of institutions that, like NYU, seek excellence in athletics while holding our students and the academic mission as the center of focus,” he said.

New York University, a full-time member of the University Athletic Association, has registered double-digit victories in 11 of the last 12 seasons under coach Bruce Haberli.  The Violets will begin competition in the Centennial in 2011-12.
