Claude Shields
Peace hired Claude Shields as its first head men’s basketball and head men’s golf coach. The Pacers will begin varsity competition in those two sports come 2012-13. A graduate of North Carolina, Shields was formerly an assistant men’s basketball coach at Guilford.
Other transactions
Athletics directors – Northland appointed Bill Wilson director of athletics. Wilson succeeds Steve Wammer, who will continue as the institution’s softball coach but is stepping down from administrative duties. Wilson is in his third year as head women’s basketball coach at Northland … Texas-Arlington selected Jim Baker as its athletic director. Baker previously worked at Texas since 1991, most recently as associate athletics director for events and operations.
Coaches
Men’s basketball – Alabama A&M and head men’s basketball coach Willie Hayes have agreed to a contract extension through the 2015 season.
Football – Colorado State named Jim McElwain head football coach. McElwain spent the past four seasons as Alabama’s offensive coordinator.
Football assistants – Idaho offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Steve Axman announced his retirement. Axman had coached for the Vandals since 2007 and in college football since 1973 … Kansas added Ron Powlus and Tim Grunhard to its football coaching staff as assistants. Powlus will coach the quarterbacks, while Grunhard takes over the offensive line.
Men’s and women’s soccer – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tabbed Shanna Caldwell as its first head women’s soccer coach. The former Akron, Baylor and Oklahoma assistant will lead a squad that begins play in 2013.
Conferences
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference accepted Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve as affiliate members in the sport of football. The two institutions will begin competition in 2014 … The Southern Athletic Association is adding Chicago and Washington U. in St. Louis as affiliate football members. The membership begins in 2015.
