Arizona named Rod Smith co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and appointed Mike Parrish as director of football operations. Smith comes from Indiana, where he held the same position for a season after coaching under new Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez at Michigan. Parrish also worked at Michigan previously.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Allegheny hired Portia Hoeg as the next director of athletics and recreation. Hoeg has been at Lake Forest since 2005 as both an assistant and associate AD.

Coaches

Men’s basketball assistants – Chaminade assistant men’s basketball coach Mike Mathey resigned. This was his first season with Chaminade

Football – Columbia chose Pete Mangurian as its new head football coach. Mangurian has extensive experience at both the collegiate and professional level, including three years as head coach at Cornell from 1998-2000 … Charlie Weis is Kansas’ new head football coach. Weis spent single seasons as the offensive coordinator for Florida and the Kansas City Chiefs after being the head coach at Notre Dame for five seasons … Massachusetts tabbed Charley Molnar as its head football coach. Molnar spent the last two seasons at Notre Dame as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach … Memphis selected Justin Fuente as its new head football coach. Fuente spent the last five seasons at TCU.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Mercer head women’s soccer coach Grant Serafy is retiring after eight seasons coaching the Bears. He is the longest-tenured women’s soccer coach at Mercer.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Montana State announced the resignation of head women’s volleyball coach Sara Schaub. Schaub led the Bobcats for the last four seasons.

Conferences

Iowa Wesleyan has been approved for membership in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference upon the institution’s successful completion of the NCAA exploratory year and acceptance as a provisional member of the NCAA. The Tigers, currently an NAIA institution, would begin SLIAC competition during the 2013-14 academic year.

Staff

Athletic training – John Jay named Lindsay Roderick head athletic trainer. Roderick filled in part-time with the Bloodhounds during the fall 2011 season.

Sports information – Hamline hired Dave Wright as its interim sports information director. Wright replaced Stephanie Harris, who resigned for family reasons.
