Applications due for sports-art competition

The National Art Museum of Sport, housed at University Place on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, is giving artists an opportunity for their work to be recognized as part of its collection of fine art.

Applications are due Sept. 7 for the 2nd Annual International Commitment to Excellence in Art and Sport: A Fine Art Competition and Exhibit. Art must depict or evoke sports, celebrating athletics or the athlete as a subject. Portrayals may be individual or team; competitive or recreational; participant or spectator-remembered; or studied still life, figurative or landscape.

Medals and prize money will be awarded to the top three winners in the competition's three categories: painting (oil, acrylic, watercolor or mixed media), sculpture (bronze, clay or composition, glass, stone or wood) and photography.

Artists must be 18 years of age or older to enter. Entries should be original artwork and submitted by digital image. Prizes and awards will not be given to those participants who cannot show their work in the exhibit.

Three $2,500 first-place prizes will be awarded:

• Germain G. Glidden “Best in Show” Award
• NCAA Painting Award, honoring excellence in collegiate athletics and academics
• NCAA Sculpture Award, honoring excellence in collegiate athletics and academics

While artwork depicting any sport or sport personality is considered for all other prizes, the jurors will consider only art depicting collegiate sport for the two $2,500 NCAA-sponsored awards.
