Gustavus Adolphus and Augsburg entered the NCAA record books after playing the longest game in NCAA Division III men's ice hockey history Saturday night.

The game ended after 138 minutes and 38 seconds when Gustavus Adolphus senior forward Eric Bigham scored at 18:38 of the fourth overtime to give his team a 6-5 victory in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs.

The game surpassed the previous Division III men's ice hockey record of 98:42 set by Minnesota-Crookston and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Minnesota-Crookston won that game, 2-1, in double overtime February 23, 2002.

Gustavus registered 104 shots on goal compared to 57 for Augsburg, and Auggies netminder Justin Lochner set an NCAA Division III record for saves in a game with 97. The previous record was 95 set by Daniel McIntosh of Northland against Adrian on January 23, 2009.

Saturday's game, which lasted 5 hours and 30 minutes in real time, began at 7:05 p.m. and ended at 12:35 a.m. Sunday.

The Gustavus-Augsburg game is the second-longest game in all of collegiate hockey, just two minutes and 57 seconds shy of the 141-minute, 35-second, five-overtime 3-2 victory by Division I Yale over Union (New York) on March 4, 2006.
