Augie Schmidt IV joined nine other active Division III baseball coaches as 700-game winners last weekend as his Carthage team opened play in Florida.

The nationally ranked Red Men defeated Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday to make Schmidt one of 17 coaches in Division III baseball history to win 700 games.

It also was the 976th victory claimed by a family member at the school. Augie Schmidt III won 276 games during 18 seasons at Carthage before his son succeeded him in 1988.

The younger Schmidt has led the Red Men to 16 appearances in the Division III Baseball Championship during his 23 seasons, including six regional titles and two third-place finishes nationally.

He also is a lecturer in Carthage's department of exercise and sport science.
