Northeastern State University, the University of Central Oklahoma and Lindenwood University have submitted applications to join the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma currently are members of the Lone Star Conference. Earlier this week, three other Lone Star members – East Central University, Southeastern Oklahoma State University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University – informed the LSC that they plan to form a new Division II conference with six institutions from Arkansas that currently are members of the Gulf South Conference.
MIAA Commissioner Jim Johnson confirmed the applications in a story that appeared in the Tahlequah (Oklahoma) Daily Press. He said that MIAA representatives would visit the prospective members, probably within the next two weeks, as the next step in the process. No firm dates were identified as part of the transition process.
If Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma leave the Lone Star, the lone remaining Oklahoma school in the LSC would be Cameron University in Lawton. Nine LSC members would remain in Texas, along with Eastern New Mexico University.
