Jim Johnson, commissioner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, has been named athletics director at MIAA member Pittsburg State University.
Johnson, who becomes just the 10th athletics director in the 102-year history of Pittsburg State athletics, fills the position held by long-time athletics director and former head football coach Chuck Broyles, who in May announced his plans to enter phased retirement.
Johnson has been the MIAA commissioner since 2007. He had been the athletics director at Texas A&M University-Commerce for two years before that. He also has served as the associate athletics director for development at the University of Central Missouri and as the compliance coordinator and men's athletics coordinator at Tarleton State University.
In addition, Johnson has been a membership services representative and the Division II governance liaison at the NCAA national office.
He holds both a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master of arts degree in education from Tarleton State.
"A goal here as a staff is to be a part of the university community and a part of the (wider) community," Johnson said during a July 30 news conference announcing his hiring. "We need to tell the story of Pitt State athletics. When people see the Pittsburg State brand, (it should) stand for the best of the best."
The MIAA Presidents Council will initiate a search for Johnson's replacement immediately.
