    Incarnate Word joins Lone Star Conference

    The Lone Star Conference announced Thursday that the University of the Incarnate Word has officially joined the league.

       "This is a great day for the Lone Star Conference," said Commissioner Stan Wagnon.  "The entire conference will benefit by being associated with the Cardinal athletic department. The quality of UIW athletics is evident with their overall finish (36th) in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings."

       Incarnate Word sponsors 19 sports (nine men's and 10 women's), including football, which as added in 2009. The Cardinals' first Lone Star Conference game will be September 11 in football when they travel to Southeastern Oklahoma. 

       The Cardinals will compete in the LSC south division in football, men's basketball, women's basketball and softball.

    The Lone Star's Council of Presidents unanimously voted to extend an invitation to Incarnate Word in January 2009. The expansion is the conference's first membership change since 2000 when Harding and Ouachita Baptist departed the league. Incarnate Word will be the 28th institution to compete as a member of the 79-year-old LSC.

       Incarnate Word first joined Division II as a member of the Heartland Conference in June 1999. Thirty-six Cardinal teams have advanced to NCAA postseason play since.
