Florida Southern held off a trio of challengers to win its 12th Division II Men's Golf Championships team title on Friday in Noblesville, Indiana.
While the Mocs have a dozen titles now, this one was their first since 2000.
"It's been a long enough time that this one feels real good," said Mocs coach Doug Gordin, whose program won four titles (1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000) in his first five years on the job. "I'm just happy these guys got to feel what it's like to win a championship."
Shooting a team final-round score of 307, Florida Southern finished seven shots ahead of runner-up Central Missouri at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Sagamore Golf Club. Others in contention until the end were third-round leader Cal State Chico (1,214) and defending champion Sonoma State (1,216).
Florida Southern entered the final round trailing Cal State Chico by one stroke, but Shelton Smith and Matt Stauch carded 74 and 71, respectively, to lead the Mocs' final-round attack.
In the individual portion of the championships, Abilene Christian junior Cyril Bouniol ran away with medalist honors. He shot a 3-under total of 285, six strokes better than Justin Yoder of Central Missouri. Bouniol tied the course record in the second round with a 68, a score duplicated twice during the final round by Indianapolis senior Seth Fair and Lynn senior Marcus Williams. [More]
