Edinboro announced January 22 that its men's and women's tennis programs will be reinstated beginning in 2010-11.
The additions give Edinboro 10 women's sports and seven men's.
The tennis programs were dropped after the 2003 season because of budget cuts (baseball was discontinued at that time as well), but a group of tennis alumni pledged to raise the funds necessary to reinstate the sport.
"The nation's economic troubles have significantly impacted higher education, and as a result, many institutions are eliminating athletics programs," said President Jeremy D. Brown. "Through the support of our generous alumni, we are able to bring tennis back to Edinboro University."
The Edinboro men's tennis team won Division II's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships in 1964, 1974 and 1978. The women's team won in 1978.
"The tennis program enjoyed a rich tradition at Edinboro at one time," said Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner. "The addition of men's and women's tennis helps diversify our offerings for prospective student athletes. We look forward to fielding a team that will be competitive in the PSAC and the region."
A coaching search for the two new programs is under way.
