The Division II Membership Committee agreed last week that it will not accept applications for new members on December 1, 2010, as previously planned.
This was to be the first year for a December 1 deadline, but the committee concluded that prospective members needed the benefit of the full academic year to present the most effective application possible. The next application deadline will be June 1, 2011.
Institutions that had a known interest in Division II membership have been notified of the change.
In other business at its summer meeting in Indianapolis, the committee approved Le Moyne College's request to have its women's lacrosse program reclassified from Division I to Division II. Le Moyne's women's lacrosse team will be eligible for Division II competition in the 2010-11 academic year.
The committee also accepted West Chester University's request to reclassify its field hockey program from Division I to Division II. West Chester will play its 2010-11 schedule at the Division I level, with the return to Division II planned for 2011-12, assuming final approval from the Membership Committee.
The committee also elected Sandra Michael of Holy Family University as its new chair, replacing Glenn Stokes of Columbus State, whose term will expire in January.
Kimberly Pate of Brevard College was elected vice chair. The committee agreed that the vice chair will represent the committee on the Membership Fund Selection Committee.
