Louella Tomlinson of St. Mary's (California) broke the Division I women's basketball record for blocked shots in a career February 11, the same night Michigan State's Allyssa DeHaan tied the previous record.
Tomlinson's career total moved to 483, while DeHaan sits tied with former TCU student-athlete Sandora Irvin at 480. Tomlinson, a junior, also broke Morehead State's Brittany Pittman's single-season record of 164, set just last year. Tomlinson has blocked 165 shots so far this season.
"I never thought I'd get this far," Tomlinson told reporters after the game. "But I'd rather have a great winning record and a great season than the records."
The Gaels lost the game to Gonzaga, 88-75.
Meanwhile, DeHaan's Spartans beat Michigan, 50-45.
"I didn't even know how close I was to the record until a couple of weeks ago," DeHaan said. "I felt a little bit of urgency… but not added pressure."
