Stanford's Klahn triumphs in men's singles final

Stanford's Bradley Klahn ended the Cinderella story for unseeded Austen Childs of Louisville in the Division I men's tennis individual championship Monday, beating Childs, 6-1, 6-2, in the singles finale.

Childs, whose own coach didn't pack enough clothes to make it to the championship match, was an improbable contender in the singles draw, beating four players who had defeated him during the regular season to make it to the final. Klahn, conversely, dominated most of his matches en route to the Stanford trophy case.

"I look at all the greats of Stanford who are up there, but I didn't want to think about that too much until now," Klahn said. "That would have made me even more nervous."

In the doubles draw, Virginia's Michael Shabaz became the first men's player to win consecutive doubles titles in nearly two decades. Shabaz and partner Drew Courtney defeated Tennessee's John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-3. [More]

Smith and Sandgren were part of the Tennessee squad that finished runners-up to Southern California in the team title. The Trojans defeated the Volunteers, 4-2, on May 26. [More]
