South Florida will begin construction on the Pam and Les Muma Basketball Center in April, the first phase of a $30 million project that will include a baseball stadium, softball stadium and football practice complex.

The 50,000-square-foot Muma Center will include practice courts, locker rooms and lounges; film theaters; athletic training rooms; a weight room; coaches offices; and conference rooms. It is named for Pam and Les Muma, who gave $3 million to the center two years ago.

The center will be built on the south side of the Sun Dome. The men's and women's basketball teams will continue to compete in the Sun Dome and practice in the dome and another facility while construction occurs on the Muma facility. Officials hope to have the Muma Center and the other three facilities completed by the end of the year.

"I'm proud to say that we've been able, through fund-raising and good management of our budget, to embark on $30 million of construction for a new basketball facility, baseball stadium, softball stadium and football practice complex using no state funding," said Athletics Director Doug Woolard. "I'm proud that we've done it the right way, taking no more debt than we can afford."
