Sarah Mollison (left) and Laura Merrifield of Maryland pursue Danielle Spencer of Northwestern during the Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship.
Northwestern looked to be a lock for a sixth title just nine minutes into the Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship at Towson, but Maryland overcame a slow start and charged to its first national championship since 2001 with a 13-11 victory Sunday.
The Terrapins began their climb back into the game midway through the first half and took the lead a few minutes into the second. They didn't relinquish that lead for the rest of the game, becoming more consistent in face-offs and defense, in addition to becoming more aggressive on offense.
"We never gave up," said most outstanding player Caitlyn McFadden. "We just kept believing in each other, and we definitely stepped it up defensively." [More]
