Pepperdine head men's volleyball coach Marv Dunphy won his 500th career match Friday when the top-ranked Waves defeated Cal State Northridge in four games (39-37, 30-27, 26-30, 30-28).

Though the NCAA does not keep official records, Dunphy appears to be only the fifth men's volleyball coach to have reached the milestone. He has coached at Pepperdine for 27 seasons, earning a record of 500-193. His teams have four NCAA championships.

Dunphy also coached the U.S. national team to World Cup, World Championships, Pan American Games and Olympic Games. He was a member of the coaching staff for the 2008 U.S. Olympic squad, which won a gold medal.

Dunphy is a member of the Volleyball Hall of Fame and the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Dunphy played volleyball for the Waves and graduated in 1974, serving as an assistant coach from his graduation to 1977, when he was named head coach. He earned a master's degree from Southern California in 1978 and a doctorate from Brigham Young in 1981. He teaches in Pepperdine's sports medicine department.
