The Division I Committee on Athletics Certification is seeking volunteers to serve on peer-review teams for Cycle 3 of the athletics certification program, which will begin campus evaluation visits in fall 2010. The committee has a particular need for peer reviewers from Football Championship Subdivision schools and lower-resource institutions. The application is available online.

Peer reviewers must be employed full time at a Division I institution or conference office; have substantial knowledge of intercollegiate athletics; and be a president or chancellor, faculty athletics representative, director of athletics or senior woman administrator or have recognized skills or experience in at least one of the four areas addressed in the athletics certification program. Five years of experience as a full-time athletics administrator is required.

Requirements and responsibilities include:

• A three-hour videoconference training session between February and June 2010 (required even if an administrator has served on a peer-review team in the past because of recent significant changes in the athletics certification program).
• Reviewing a self-study report of a similar institution (about six hours).
• A three- to four-day campus visit with the peer-review team of three to five members, including a chancellor or president. Visits usually occur between September 15 and November 20 each year.
• Conducting interviews with institutional and athletics department staff members, reviewing records and tour athletics facilities during the visit.
• Assessing the accuracy of the self-study, the level of broad-based participation during the self-study process and helping the committee evaluate the information in the report.

Previous peer-review team members have lauded the process as one that helps when an institution is conducting its own certification self-study.
