    Division I Leadership Council to look at cost-saving initiatives

    The Division I Leadership Council will turn its attention to cost-savings initiatives recommended by the governance structure at the group's next meeting.

    Topics will include additional recruiting and coaching limits and changing competition limits. The Council will meet March 23 in Indianapolis.

    Last year, the Division I Board of Directors directed the various governance bodies to examine their areas of expertise for possible rule or policy changes that could help the Association and its member institutions cut costs. The cabinets kept competitive equity, student-athlete well-being and sound academic standards in mind when conducting their reviews. The Council will also focus on those core values when prioritizing the recommendations.

    The cabinets offered various suggestions for the Council to consider, including:

    The Council will review the recommendations and prioritize suggestions for the Board of Directors. The Board can then introduce legislation into the 2010-11 cycle if it wishes.

    The Council will also finalize a report on new Division I membership standards and the process new members must follow to gain access to the division. The group expects to send its final report to the Board in April.
