OMAHA, Nebraska – Many of the great players, coaches and key contributors to the Men's College World Series were honored recently during the 2010 CWS.
The NCAA and CWS Inc. announced the College World Series Legends team last week on the first day of this year's series.
The 28 members of the Legends Team were chosen from a list of 95 nominees. Votes were cast by fans, college baseball writers and Division I baseball coaches. The players chosen strictly on their performance as student-athletes in CWS games played in Rosenblatt Stadium.
"I was impressed with how many of them were honored to be a part of the Legends Team," said Dennie Poppe, the NCAA vice president for Division I baseball and football. "Dave Winfield wasn't able to be here because of a prior commitment, but he wrote me a letter saying how much he wished he would have been able to be here."
Winfield, a Major League Baseball Hall of Famer, was voted onto the CWS Legends Team as an outfielder.
Poppe added, "He also wrote ‘Just remind them that I could pitch, too.'"

College World Series All-Stars through the years were also honored before several games. The All-Stars are made up of individuals who have made key contributions to the administration of the event.
"We wanted to recognize and honor the tradition of the College World Series," Poppe said. "These are key individuals who have had a significant impact that many people aren't aware of. They all worked behind the scenes to make the CWS as successful as it has been over time."
