The NCAA athletics certification staff will provide an educational session at the 2011 NCAA Convention in San Antonio aimed at informing Division I members about the third cycle of the athletics certification program.

The session is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 14, and will include the opportunity for a private session with certification staff members.

The session is intended for chancellors/presidents, directors of athletics, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives, compliance coordinators, athletics certification liaisons, and other conference, institutional and department of athletics staff members who are involved with athletics certification.

The 90-minute session will focus on:

Athletics certification staff members will offer private 15-minute appointments after the overall session to provide additional consultation and respond to institution- and conference-specific questions. To schedule an appointment, contact Anne Griever at agrieger@ncaa.org by December 1.

A veteran member of the committee will participate in the presentation to offer insight into how the committee deliberates and will provide helpful hints for managing the workload without feeling overwhelmed. Also, the NCAA staff will discuss key strategies to help ensure that institutions are meeting many of the athletics certification program requirements before beginning the self-study process.

The purpose of athletics certification is to ensure integrity in the institution's athletics program and to help institutions improve their athletics department. NCAA legislation mandating athletics certification was adopted in 1993. The athletics certification process, which involves a self-study led by an institution's president or chancellor, includes a review of these primary components: governance and commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; and gender/diversity issues and student-athlete well-being.

For more information about the presentation, contact Charnele Kemper at ckemper@ncaa.org or Mira Colman at mcolman@ncaa.org.
