Shaunte Nance-Johnson, left, and Anthony Johnson were drafted by the Harlem Globetrotters.

Former Montana basketball student-athletes Anthony Johnson and Shaunte Nance-Johnson were both drafted recently by the Harlem Globetrotters as part of the team's 2010 draft class. Johnson and Nance-Johnson are believed to be the first husband-wide tandem drafted by a professional sports team.

The Tacoma natives married in 2006.

Johnson played two seasons at Montana and earned the conference's newcomer of the year award in 2008-09. He scored Montana's last 21 points (42 total) in the Big Sky Conference championship game, helping his team rally to beat Weber State and earn the conference's spot in the 2010 Division I Men's Basketball Championship.

Nance-Johnson played for the Lady Griz for two seasons. If she makes the team, she would be the ninth female Globetrotter in the team's history. One of the previous eight women to be named a Globetrotter, Joyce Walker, coached Nance-Johnson in a high school all-star game in 2005.

The Globetrotters also drafted Mark Titus, a former student-athlete at Ohio State who blogged about his experiences as a walk-on, and Marqus Blakely, winner of the 2010 College Slam Dunk Competition.

Floors go green: Valparaiso will install an environmentally sound and performance-designed GreenPlay athletics flooring system in its Athletics-Recreation Center this summer.

The floor's environmentally friendly features include a subfloor made from recycled engineered polymer and the ability for the subfloor panels to be recycled again when the life of the floor is complete. The floor is offered by Connor Sport Flooring. Chief executive Ron Cerny said installation of the floor contributes toward LEED certification (verification that a building is environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live or work).

The Valparaiso project will include 25,000-square-feet of first-grade maple hardwood on the surface of the main floor. The GreenPlay system offers optimum shock absorption through its unique design, including specifically-located isolation ridges that provide quick response for lighter loads and a second-stage response for more aggressive impact.

The project should be completed by August. Athletics Director Mark LaBarbera will oversee the installation.

"Our coaches were impressed with the overall feel of the floor and the quality of Connor installations," LaBarbera said. "This system is a great opportunity for Valpo to provide our student-athletes with a better practice and competition environment in a more ecologically friendly manner."

New national SAAC members: The Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee recently welcomed five new members. They are Carolyn Boyd, a softball student-athlete from Stetson; Rachael Maina, a soccer student-athlete from UALR; Jessica Stacy, a swimming student-athlete from Hawaii; Kaitlyn Vincek, a volleyball student-athlete from Eastern Michigan; and Yaser Elqutub, a football student-athlete from Northwestern State.

Boyd, who chairs the Atlantic Sun Conference SAAC, transferred to Stetson from North Carolina-Greensboro in 2008. She started 25 games at first base for the Hatters.

Maina started 20 games in 2009, helping the Trojans advance to the Sun Belt championship game for the first time in school history.

Stacy, from Vancouver, Washington, swims the freestyle, individual medley and breaststroke.

Vincek, an outside hitter who redshirted her freshman year, had 54 kills in 41 sets played in 2009.

Elqutub, a linebacker from Texas, will be considered for special teams as a walk-on.
