January 2009 – NCAA President Myles Brand announces to the national office staff and the membership that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and that the prognosis for his recovery is "not good."
September 16, 2009 – Brand dies at his home in Indianapolis.
September 22, 2009 – NCAA Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Jim Isch is named interim president.
October 28, 2009 – The NCAA conducts a special tribute at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to honor Brand's legacy.
October 29, 2009 – The Executive Committee appoints a six-president panel of NCAA governance leaders chaired by Oregon State President and Executive Committee chair Ed Ray to oversee the search for a successor to Brand. Others on the panel are Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Hampton President William Harvey, Molloy President Drew Bogner, Widener President James Harris and Weber State President Ann Millner.
December 3, 2009 – Parker Executive Search is selected to assist the NCAA Executive Committee and its presidential search committee in the search for the successor to Myles Brand. The firm is headed by Dan Parker, who was one of the principals with Baker-Parker, the firm that assisted in the 2002 search that resulted in the hiring of Brand.
January 19, 2010 – After consultation with dozens of membership representatives and other NCAA stakeholders, Parker Executive Search posts a position description that includes attributes the successful candidate is expected to portray and outcome-oriented goals he or she should strive to accomplish.
April 27, 2010 – University of Washington President Mark A. Emmert named president by the NCAA Executive Committee.
