Penn State’s 109-match volleyball winning streak came to an end Saturday when No. 2 Stanford defeated the Nittany Lions, 3-0 (28-26, 25-12, 25-18), in the championship match of the Nike Big Four Volleyball Tournament in Gainesville, Fla.
The last time that Penn State had been beaten was nearly three years prior on September 15, 2007, dropping a 3-2 contest to Stanford.
Senior Alix Klineman led the Cardinal with 16 kills and 10 digs for her third double-double of the season. She became the 10th player in school history to record more than 1,500 career kills. Senior Cassidy Lichtman added 12 kills, 22 assists and seven digs.
Penn State’s 109-match win streak is the longest winning streak by a Division I women’s athletics team and is third-longest winning streak in any sport in any division in the history of NCAA sports. It is third behind only the Miami (Florida) men’s tennis team’s winning streak of 137 straight matches (1957-64) and the BYU-Hawaii women’s tennis team’s winning streak of 130 straight matches (2002-05).
