Maryville (Tennessee) coach joins 200-200 club

Maryville College (Tennessee) men’s and women’s soccer coach Pepe Fernandez earned his 500th career collegiate coaching victory with a 2-1 men’s win over Transylvania University on September 22.

Fernandez has coached both the men’s and women’s programs at Maryville since 1991. He is one of only five coaches to have won more than 200 games as both the men’s and women’s coach.

Edgewood College coach Tim Alexander accomplished the feat earlier this month. The other three coaches to reach this unique benchmark are (totals entering this season) Andy Smyth of Findlay (214 wins with the men’s team and 223 with the women’s), Clive Charles of Portland (213 men, 226 women) and Doug Mello of Hendrix (400 men, 282 women).

All but Charles are still actively coaching. Mello is currently the head coach of the Hendrix men, but does not coach the women’s team.

David Large, a junior midfielder on the Maryville men’s team, said, “Coach Fernandez has been a great mentor since I first came to his soccer camp when I was 5 years old. He is an incredibly charismatic leader and really knows how to bring a bunch of college students together to form a successful team. 

“His coaching philosophy and strong character have raised this program to an extremely high level, and I have no doubts that he will continue to do this for many years to come.”

Maryville will honor Fernandez’s accomplishment in a brief ceremony before the Scots take the field against the University of Dallas this Sunday.
