The top-ranked team in Division II women’s volleyball, Concordia-St. Paul, saw its 75-match winning streak come to an end with a 3-0 loss to Grand Valley State in the University of Tampa tournament.
The 75-match streak is the second-longest in the history of Division II athletics, ranking only behind the 130-match win streak of the Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis team from 2002 to 2005.
Concordia’s last loss came to Cal State San Bernardino on August 28, 2008. Concordia-St. Paul is the three-time defending Division II national champion.
Also, Texas won its 1,000th match in program history with a 3-2 win over then-No. 23 Long Beach State in the Time Warner Cable Invitational.
“It’s a nice honor for the program,” Texas 10-year coach Jerritt Elliot said of the milestone win. “There are a lot of people who were responsible for those victories. With Jody Conradt (who went on to become a legendary women’s basketball coach at the school) being the first volleyball coach and to Mick Haley, and now it is my opportunity.
“It’s an honor to be a coach here and it’s an honor to be a player here – and we recognize that and it’s in part because of the rich tradition of having 1,000 wins.”
