Edgewood soccer coach reaches double benchmark

The Edgewood College men’s soccer team defeated Illinois College, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon, clinching head coach Tim Alexander’s 200th men’s soccer victory. Alexander is now just the fifth coach in the history of the NCAA (all divisions) to record both 200 men’s soccer and 200 women’s soccer victories.

Alexander, who began coaching the Edgewood men’s soccer program in 1990 and the women’s program in 1993, now has 200 wins on the men’s side to go with his 233 wins with the women’s team.

The other four coaches to reach this unique benchmark are (totals entering this season) Andy Smyth of Findlay (214 wins with the men’s team and 223 with the women’s), Pepe Fernandez of Maryville (Tennessee) (262 men, 235 women), Clive Charles of Portland (213 men, 226 women) and Doug Mello of Hendrix (400 men, 282 women).

All but Charles are still actively coaching. Mello is currently the head coach of the Hendrix men, but does not coach the women’s team.

In addition to coaching the soccer teams, Alexander has also coached three seasons of men’s tennis and five as skipper of the Eagles’ baseball team during his tenure. He was a two-time all-conference defender at Wisconsin-Green Bay and began his coaching career with a successful stint at the high school level before coming to Edgewood.

The Edgewood men’s team is 1-2 on the season heading into this Saturday’s match with Aurora. The Eagle women, who also host Aurora on September 11, are 3-0.
