Will Prewitt
Will Prewitt, associate commissioner of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, has been named as commissioner of a new conference of Division II institutions in the Southwest.
The yet-to-be-named conference, which is seeking Division II membership, includes six Arkansas institutions currently in the Gulf South Conference and three Oklahoma institutions from the Lone Star Conference.
The application deadline for the conference is Dec. 1, although administrators expect to have the application submitted by early November. Assuming the deadline is met, the Division II Membership Committee likely would review the application at its February meeting, possibly issuing a decision at that time, with active membership possible for fall 2011.
Prewitt was affiliated with the WVIAC for 11 years, overseeing championships, sport administration, scheduling and media relations.
“It is an incredible opportunity to get on the ground floor and be involved with every part of a league as it forms and grows,” Prewitt told the Charleston Daily Mail. “This is probably the only job in Division II that I would leave the WVIAC for.”
Prewitt is a member of the NCAA Football Rules Committee and served four years on the NCAA Division II Championships Committee.
Prewitt previously served as sports information director at Tusculum and before that worked with the baseball and basketball programs at Appalachian State.
