Four new members to begin DIII Management Council terms

One president, two athletics directors and one faculty athletics representative have been nominated to serve four-year terms on the Division III Management Council beginning after the 2011 NCAA Convention.

The four nominees to be approved at the Division III business session in San Antonio on Jan. 15 are:

• Marjorie Hass, president, Austin College (Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference)
• Jan Hathorn, athletics director, Washington and Lee University (Old Dominion Athletic Conference)
• Nancy Meyer, director of women’s athletics, Calvin College (Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association)
• Kurt Beron, faculty athletics representative, University of Texas at Dallas (American Southwest Conference)

If approved by the membership on the Convention floor, the four new members will serve terms on the Council through the 2015 Convention.

Hass

Marjorie Haas will fill one of two slots on the Management Council reserved for presidents. She will replace Wells College President Lisa Marsh Ryerson (who has been nominated to begin a four-year term on the Division III Presidents Council). Moravian College President Christopher Thomforde is the other president currently serving on the Management Council.

Hass became the 15th president of Austin College in July 2009 after serving as the provost at Muhlenberg College from 2004 to 2009. Before that, she served for nearly a year as interim dean of the college for faculty and vice president for academic affairs. She also was director of the Center for Ethics at Muhlenberg for three years, responsible for programming and integration of the center’s program into the curriculum.

Hass began her career at Muhlenberg in 1993 as assistant professor of philosophy and was promoted to associate professor in 1998 and to professor in 2006.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Illinois, Champaign. She continued studies there to complete a master’s degree and Ph.D. in philosophy.

Hathorn

Jan Hathorn began her tenure as Washington and Lee’s AD in July 2007. The Generals have won nearly 70 percent of their contests and 22 conference championships since. Five students have also been awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship on her watch.

Hathorn served as the women’s lacrosse coach for 19 seasons and as the women’s soccer coach for 14 seasons before being named AD. She had also been an assistant athletics director and the university’s director of physical education since 2002.

She guided the soccer team to a 129-88-9 (.591) record from 1987 to 2000 and was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference coach of the year twice. In lacrosse, Hathorn was a nine-time league coach of the year who led the Generals to a 222-93 (.705) record and eight NCAA tournament berths from 1989 to 2007.

Before arriving at Washington and Lee, Hathorn spent five years at Denison University, where she coached the women’s lacrosse team to a 55-19 overall record and five conference titles.

Hathorn earned a B.A. in physical education from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1982 and a M.A. in physical education from Ohio State University in 1985.

Meyer

Nancy Meyer has served as Calvin’s director of women’s athletics since the 1996-97 academic year. A 1978 Calvin graduate (and student-athlete in softball and volleyball), Meyer returned to Calvin in 1986 after completing her Eh.D. at the University of Northern Colorado. 

Meyer taught at Calvin from 1979 to 1983 before returning to school for her doctoral work. Meyer also has a master’s degree from the University of Arizona. 

She achieved success as a women’s cross country coach, leading Calvin to national championships in 1998 and 1999. During her 20 years at the helm of the Calvin women’s cross country program (she stepped down as head coach in 2005), she won 17 league titles, 14 Great Lakes Regional titles and compiled seven top-four national finishes. 

Meyer also has been the head coach of the women’s tennis and men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams at Calvin. She has also served as a coach in the Calvin softball program.

As an administrator, Meyer has served on the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee and has been the MIAA coordinator for men’s and women’s track and field. She currently serves as the MIAA coordinator for men’s and women’s cross country.

Beron

Kurt Beron is a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Texas at Dallas. He also is the school’s faculty athletics representative.

His research is in cross-disciplinary applications of quantitative methodology. He has a bachelor’s degree in economics and sociology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a master’s in social work from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Beron also earned and a Ph.D. in economics from North Carolina. He currently is studying the human capital development of children and young adults and their effects on later outcomes, emphasizing the traditionally non-economic factors that affect this development.

At Texas-Dallas, Beron has served as the associate dean and college master for the School of Social Sciences and has chaired the university’s Information Resources Committee and Committee on Educational Policy, among others.

He completed a two-year stint as chair of the NCAA Research Committee in September, and he has served on the NCAA Data Analysis Research Network Committee, the NCAA Research Review Board, the NCAA Data Sharing Advisory Committee and the Faculty Representative Advisory Panel.
