Barton College announced it is adding men’s volleyball and women’s golf next fall to boost its varsity sport offerings to 16.
College officials say the additions are part of an overall recruitment strategy as Barton positions itself to achieve appreciable enrollment goals in the next few years.
The addition of men’s volleyball is particularly significant since it gives Conference Carolinas – of which Barton is a member – the requisite six sponsoring teams for men’s volleyball to be considered a full conference sport. Other league sponsors are Lees-McRae, Limestone, Mount Olive, Pfeiffer and future conference member King College.
The women’s golf program at Barton will join conference members Belmont Abbey, Coker, Erskine, Limestone, Mount Olive, Pfeiffer, Queens (North Carolina), St. Andrews Presbyterian, and future conference members King and North Greenville University as sponsors.
Barton men’s golf coach John Hackney will take on the duties of head women’s golf coach. As a result, his responsibilities as sports information director will be reduced. The college plans to hire a director of athletics media relations, who will also assume the role of assistant men’s and women’s golf coach.
Barton hopes to hire a head men’s and women’s volleyball coach by January 2011.
