Get it Right is an occasional feature created to provide accurate information on NCAA-related issues.
LZ Granderson’s Aug. 6 commentary on ESPN.com “No muscle behind latest NCAA policy” is a prime example of a reporter writing on a subject without the benefit of facts.
Granderson’s claim: There are no penalties for coaches with poor records. In fact, the NCAA hasn't even decided if the score will follow the coach if he or she leaves, or if the score will stay with the institution.
Fact: The APR penalty structure has been in effect for several years and some institutions are already facing penalties like loss of scholarships. Further, the APR score does follow the coach as part of his or her coaching legacy.
