The RecordNathan Davis was named as head men’s basketball coach at Randolph-Macon. Davis, who is just the fourth coach since 1956 to lead the Yellow Jackets, takes over for Mike Rhoades, who resigned to become an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth. Davis spent the previous season as an assistant at Colgate and also has coached at Bucknell, Navy, and Emory and Henry. A 1997 graduate and four-year letter-winner in basketball at Randolph-Macon, he is one of only five players in school history to have more than 500 career rebounds, 300 career assists and 100 career steals.

Baseball – Concordia (Texas) head coach Mike Gardner will step down to become a full-time teaching position in the university’s kinesiology department, effective July 1. In 10 seasons, Gardner has guided the Tornadoes to more than 200 victories, an appearance in the 2002 NCAA Division III National Championship series and five American Southwest Conference championship series.
Women’s soccer – Neil Stafford resigned as head coach at Assumption. Stafford, who has guided the Greyhounds since 2001, is the college’s all-time winningest women’s soccer coach with a 72-61-16 mark in eight years … Holy Cross named Darren Gallagher as head coach. Since 2005, he has been technical director at Massachusetts Premier Soccer and has led two under-17 girls’ squads and one under-17 boys’ team to national club titles.
Deaths
Former UCLA head football coach Bill Barnes died April 23. He was 91. Barnes compiled a 31-34-3 record as the Bruins head coach from 1958-64. Under his direction, UCLA claimed the 1961 AAWU (now Pac-10 Conference) championship and made an appearance in the 1962 the Rose Bowl. He also served as an assistant at Tennessee in 1941 and at Arkansas from 1946-49. Barnes was an all-American at Tennessee, where he played multiple positions and was a member of Volunteer squads that appeared in the 1939 Orange Bowl and the 1940 Rose Bowl.
