The RecordIllinois promoted Bob Starkell to director of gymnastics, Justin Spring to men's associate head coach and Ivan Ivankov to full-time men’s assistant coach. Starkell, the 2009 Big Ten coach of the year, just concluded his 16th season at Illinois and his 10th as the women's head coach, while Spring, who won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics as part of the U.S. men’s gymnastics team, has been an assistant coach for the Illini for three seasons. Ivankov, who was a visiting assistant coach, recently finished his first season with the program. The staff reorganization is a result of the retirement of head men’s coach Yoshi Hayasaki.
Other transactions
Director of athletics – Houston Athletics Director Dave Maggard announced plans to retire, effective May 11. Maggard has been athletics director at the school since January 2002 and formerly filled the same responsibilities at Miami (Florida) and California.
Women’s basketball – Deb Reardon, head coach at Saint Joseph’s (Maine) resigned. Reardon posted a 65-65 record and two postseason berths in five seasons at the helm.
Women’s basketball assistant – Fordham added Nettie Respondek as an assistant coach. Respondek formerly was an assistant with the program from 2006 to 2008.
Men’s basketball assistant – Seattle Pacific head basketball men’s coach Jeff Hironaka was chosen as an assistant at Washington State. Hironaka, who joined the Seattle Pacific coaching staff as an assistant in 1991, compiled a 134-67 record and led the Falcons to five Division II tournament appearances in seven years as head coach.
