Penn head men’s and women’s fencing coach, David Micahnik, retired after more than three decades in charge of the men’s and women’s programs. The 2008 inductee into the United States Fencing Association Hall of Fame led Penn to winning records in each of his 34 years, compiling an overall career mark of 722-210. A 1959 Penn graduate, Micahnik was a first-team All-Ivy selection in epee as a senior, the 1960 U.S. national champion and a three-time Olympian (1960, 1964, 1968).

Other transactions

Baseball – North Carolina awarded head coach Mike Fox with a six-year contract through 2014. The 2008 National Coach of the Year, Fox is 483-200-1 in 11 years at North Carolina and has led the Tar Heels to three consecutive College World Series berths.

Men’s basketball assistants – Washington chose Raphael Chillious as an assistant coach. Chillious most recently has been Nike's business manager for Elite Youth Basketball and previously was the head coach and co-athletics director at South Kent (Conn.) School from 2003-08 … Curtis Allen assumed assistant coaching responsibilities at Washington State after fulfilling similar duties at Portland State for the past four seasons … Western Michigan added Clayton Bates as an assistant. Bates, previously an assistant for with the program for eight seasons, replaces Andy Hipsher.

Women’s basketballNell Fortner signed a six-year contract extension to continue as head coach at Auburn. Fortner, who has been in charge of the program for five years, led the 2008-09 squad to a 30-4 season record and its first Southeastern Conference regular-season title in 20 years … Emory and Henry head coach Joy Scruggs resigned.

WrestlingJohnMark Bentley was elevated to head coach at Appalachian State, replacing Paul Mance, who had been in charge of the program for the past 33 years. Bentley, an assistant coach with the program for the past three seasons, formerly was head coach at Watauga (North Carolina) High School and was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion wrestler at North Carolina from 1997-2001 … Indianapolis named Josh Hardman as head coach. Hardman has spent the last four years as head coach at Dakota Wesleyan University and formerly was an assistant at South Dakota State and Manchester.

Men’s soccer assistant – Holy Cross named John Frederick as an assistant coach. For the past 10 years, Frederick has been the head boys’ varsity soccer coach at Algonquin (Massachusetts) Regional High School, where he led squads to the 2004 and 2005 Division I state championships.
