The RecordAssociate director of athletics – James Greenwell was tabbed as senior associate director of athletics at Georgia State. Greenwell, who begins his new responsibilities May 4, has been the senior associate director of athletics for facilities, operations and events at Maryland since August 2005. He previously completed stints as an assistant athletics director for facilities and operations Central Florida and as the coordinator of operations for Bartow Arena at Alabama Birmingham.
Men’s basketball – Louisville’s Richard Pitino was hired as an assistant coach at Florida. For the past two years, he has fulfilled similar responsibilities under his father, Louisville head coach Rick Pitino, and after serving as an assistant at Duquesne (2006-07), Northeastern (2005-06) and College of Charleston (2004-05). He replaces Shaka Smart, who became the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth … Tim Whittle was named as head coach at Macalester. Whittle was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Washington U. in St. Louis, where in five seasons, he helped guide the Bears to a 112-30 overall record, three consecutive Final Four appearances and the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Division III national championships.
Deaths
Felix "Doc" Blanchard, the 1945 Heisman Trophy winner, died April 18. He was 84. Blanchard, who along with teammate Glenn Davis, helped Army compile a 27-0-1 record from 1944-46 and consecutive national championships in 1944-45. Blanchard, who also played linebacker and was responsible for kicking duties, registered 38 touchdowns in 28 career games and was a three-time all-American.
