The RecordLou Saban, who coached three professional football teams and at all three NCAA membership levels – working as recently as the 2002 season at Chowan – died at his home Sunday at age 87. Saban, whose longest professional coaching stint was from 1962 to 1965 and again from 1972 to 1976 with the Buffalo Bills, also held coaching posts at Northwestern, Western Illinois, Maryland, Army and Central Florida, as well as Miami (Florida), where he also served in the late 1970s as athletics director. He was a standout quarterback and linebacker at Indiana. In addition to leading the Buffalo Bills to American Football League titles in 1964 and 1965, he was the first coach of what is now the New England Patriots and also coached the Denver Broncos. Following a 2003 gift from George Steinbrenner, principal owner of the New York Yankees who served as a coaching assistant to Saban at Northwestern, the National Football Foundation named one of its postgraduate scholarships for Saban.

President – The contract of Ralph Slaughter will not be renewed at Southern University when it expires June 30.
Coaches
Men’s basketball – Matt Matheny named head coach at Elon after 16 years on the staff at Davidson, where he has been associate head coach for the last six seasons.
Field hockey – Meghan Daly selected as head coach at Framingham State after assisting last season at Clark (Massachusetts).
Football assistants – Corey Batoon hired as safeties coach at Arkansas State after 11 seasons as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Northern Arizona … Derrick Johnson retained as cornerbacks coach at Towson, where the former North Carolina cornerback coached last year after serving on the staff at McDaniel.
Swimming and diving/water polo – Erin Knight named aquatics director at Utica, where in addition to head coaching duties she will oversee day-to-day operations of the college pool. She served as assistant cross country coach at Utica during the past year.
Women’s volleyball – Timothy Walenga appointed head coach at North Park. He is a former member of staffs at Southern Illinois, Elon, Marshall and Minnesota State Mankato, and was head coach at Dominican (Illinois).
Deaths
John D. Carroll, a standout high jumper at Delaware during the mid-1980s, died recently at age 46. Carroll, who attended Franklin & Marshall before transferring to Delaware and still holds the Delaware high school state record in the high jump, was an assistant district attorney for the Special Victims Unit Bureau in Queens, New York … William V. Moore, a professor of political science at College of Charleston who served as the school’s faculty athletics representative, died March 25. He was 64. Moore served a term as president of the Southern Conference, and also was the longtime public address announcer for College of Charleston’s men’s basketball team.
