The RecordElvin J. James selected as head football coach at Livingstone. He returns to coaching after serving as assistant to the athletics director at Elizabeth City State, his alma mater. James served 12 years as a high school head coach, leading teams at Goldsboro (North Carolina) High School to nine state-playoff appearances, and also twice served on the football staff at Elizabeth City, including a stint as assistant head coach and recruiter. He will be attempting to turn around a program that last had a winning season in 1998.
Other transactions
Athletic director – Laura Moliken appointed at Ursinus, where she has been interim AD since July. She has just finished her 11th season at the helm of the Ursinus field hockey team, which won the Division III championship in 2006 and has advanced to the national semifinals four times.
Coaches
Football – Connell Maynor named head coach at Winston-Salem State after 10 years on the staff at Fayetteville State, where he served most recently as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach … Eric Wolford selected as head coach at Youngstown State after serving this year as running-game coordinator and offensive line coach at South Carolina. He also has served during the past decade on staffs at Houston, North Texas, Arizona and Illinois … Nick Fletcher released after 10 years as head coach at Denison.
Golf – Ryan Peffer hired as men’s and women’s coach at Queens (North Carolina). He previously was head women’s coach at Franklin & Marshall … Brian Kortan named assistant men’s coach at New Mexico. He has played professionally for 16 years.
Soccer – Caleb Porter signed a new five-year contract through 2014 at Akron, after leading the Zips to a runner-up finish in this year’s Division I Men’s Soccer Championship.
Volleyball – Disa Garner resigned after 10 years as head women’s coach at James Madison, where her teams compiled a 157-129 record. She also has been head coach at Missouri … Jason Torres hired as head men’s coach at Mount Saint Vincent, where he played soccer and volleyball during the 1990s. He has coached girls’ volleyball at Horace Mann School in the Bronx since 2003.
Staff
Athletic trainer – Larry Gardner, former Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins athletic trainer who has served in that role at Texas-Dallas since 2001, announced his retirement. He also served during the 1960s as head athletic trainer at Stanford and as an assistant at California.
