Notre Dame named Brian Kelly head football coach. Kelly, who led Cincinnati to a 12-0 season, took over at Notre Dame on Monday and will not coach the Bearcats in the Sugar Bowl. Kelly compiled a 34-6 record in three seasons with Cincinnati, and he also coached at Central Michigan and Grand Valley State. He has a 171-57-2 record as a college coach. Notre Dame signed him to a five-year deal.

Other transactions

Associate athletics director – Stony Brook promoted Rob Emmerich to associate director of athletics for external services. Emmerich will also oversee a strategic marketing campaign for the department.

Coaches

Women’s basketball – Laurie Kelly agreed to a three-year contract extension with Northern Arizona through June 2013.

Football assistants – D.J. McCarthy resigned his position as wide receivers coach at LSU. McCarthy had been with the Tigers since 2007 … Arkansas State released offensive coordinator Doug Ruse. He had been with the school since 2002.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Xavier named Woody Sherwood to lead its women’s program. Sherwood spent the last three seasons at Indiana. He has head coaching experience at Butler and Towson.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Marywood tabbed Tom Calomeris, who coached at Catholic, to begin the school’s new men’s and women’s program.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Erica Hollot will lead the women’s program at Rensselaer. She spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Smith.

Men’s and women’s track and field – James Madison hired Ta’ Frias, who was an assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach at Stephen F. Austin from 2001-08 and at Richmond from 1998-00.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Tiffin tabbed Dana Cordova to replace T.J. Shouse at the women’s helm. Cordova previously coached at Montana State-Billings.

Staff

Development – Stony Brook promoted Sam Kornhauser to director of athletics advancement and alumni relations.
