The RecordIndiana will not renew the contract of men’s coach Mike Freitag, who succeeded longtime head coach Jerry Yeagley in 2004 and led the Hoosiers to their seventh Division I Men’s Soccer Championship that year. Freitag, an all-American at Indiana in 1979 playing for Yeagley and an assistant coach for four of the Hoosiers’ national-championship teams, compiled an 86-32-19 record through six seasons. The school also dismissed assistant coaches Phil Presser and Aleksey Korol.
Transactions
President – Mark Putnam selected at Central College (Iowa). He has been senior vice president for executive affairs at Northeastern.
Coaches
Baseball – Craig Gerdes named head coach at Eureka, where he is a former assistant coach.
Football – TCU head coach Gary Patterson agreed to a new contract through 2016 after leading the Horned Frogs to a 12-0 regular-season mark this year and an 85-27 record through nine seasons at the school … Chuck Broyles retired after 20 years as head football coach at Pittsburg State and also is taking a leave of absence as athletics director at the school ... Willie Totten resigned after eight seasons at Mississippi Valley State, where he has been asked to continue to serve as a health, physical education and recreation faculty member and establish a fund-raising athletics foundation … Kent Keith named interim head coach at Nicholls State, where he has been an assistant since 2004, serving most recently as wide receivers coach.
Deaths
Robert “Bob” Devlin, Worcester State’s first athletics director and a coach of multiple sports who also served as president of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference, died November 27. He was 84. Devlin coached men’s and women’s basketball and also coached tennis and golf at Worcester State, and also coached men’s basketball and tennis at WPI … Jack Sareault, former sports information director for the Northwest Conference and former sportswriter for the Tacoma Tribune, died November 22 at age 74.
